Bring your ambition and your ailment to Bad
Kleinkirchheim and go home a new person. That’s the kind of
promise built into the offerings of this pretty resort in southern
Austria.
BKK, let’s call it that, is a spa in Carinthia, the state that
borders on northern Italy and Slovenia. You can ski until your thighs
burn and rejuvenate later in a thermal pool, either a public one or in
your hotel.
But it’s not a place for anybody who screamed for the EPA when
he discovered radon gas in his New Jersey basement. Radon is in these
pools, but vacationers here, as well as European doctors and insurance
companies, attribute great healing powers to the gas. They say radon
has a short half life, leaves the body early without harming it, and
cures a lot of ills on its journey. At the least, it is soothing to
bathe in warm water, indoors or out, after coming off the slopes.
Guests with kids can find places to be more active with water games.
The skiing terrain here has 56 miles of groomed trails, all but
11 percent of them classified as beginner or intermediate. Yet there is
an impressive vertical drop of nearly 4,500 feet and a FIS run
two-and-a-half miles long that is named after native son Franz Klammer,
hero of the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck. Twenty-five lifts include
surface, chairs and gondolas.
Advanced skiers and snowboarders can find plenty of off-piste
routes. Snowboarders also have a halfpipe. Cross country skiers lope
along on many miles of loops through the picturesque countryside. One
loop is at high altitude. Winter wanderers have 24 miles of paths.
Other available winter sports include tobogganing, ice
skating, and parasailing. As in most year-round resorts, particularly
spa towns, name your indoor activity and you can have it.
Hotels range from elegant to simple and are listed by type:
family, sport, business, and wellness. Skiers can find reasonable
half-board arrangements (under $100) in attractive four-star hotels.
The resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim is about as far away from the
usual gateways to Austria as one can get. But frequent train and bus
service is available. Some skiers choose to connect via Austrian
Airlines to Klagenfurt, capital of Carinthia, only 31 miles away.
