A Winter (Sport) Wonderland

Austria has the reputation of being an ideal country for winter sports, a fact that has often prompted the question whether a vacation is too expensive in one of the renowned ski resorts, such as St. Anton am Arlberg, Innsbruck (the site of two Olympic Games), Zell am See, or many other fine ski areas.

Some American skiers may have shied away from contacting their travel agents about a package to Austria. But, in fact, ski vacations during high season in some of the best ski regions of our Alps are highly competitive with ski holidays in the United States. Sometimes they are significantly cheaper.

A price comparison of Austrian ski packages with those of the Rocky Mountains has shown that Austria, where the weather is often more reliable for skiing, may be as much as 30 percent less expensive. A typical one-week package to Innsbruck in high season can be priced as low as U.S. $845, while a comparable vacation in Aspen may cost nearly $1,900.

American skiers are pleasantly surprised to learn that a typical Austrian visit includes airfare, lodging and most meals. And the costs of ski lift passes are 30 to 50 percent lower than they are in the American west.

It's Got To Be Austria

Aprés-ski is something Austrians are very good at, too — and it is not only a drink at a pleasant bar. It encompasses almost every conceivable activity for a relaxing evening after an enervating day on the slopes. Maybe it is sitting with friends in a ski hut, drinking mulled wine, eating hearty food and swapping tall stories. Or dining later in a fine restaurant.

Attending a cultural event reminds visitors that rarely in the world are nature and culture so closely linked. And that's obvious year round; in every season our resorts are prepared to prove that service is a tradition in Austria.
