UPPER BAVARIA

Famous for its Passion Play staged every 10 years since the 17th century. Mostly a Nordic rather than downhill area, but if you visit the town in winter you can ski and look down on Ettal.

Terrain: Two areas, Kolben on one side of the village, Laber on the other. Kolben is mostly beginner and intermediate; Laber has steep pitch from the top of the mountain, served by a cable car

Other Information: Sightseeing is a must in the Ammer Valley—nearby the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal and within 50 km (31 mi) are 2 castles of King Ludwig II: Neuschwanstein, and nearby Linderhof. The annual 55 km King Ludwig marathon in February attracts 3,000 Nordic competitors from all over Europe.
