INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to present the fourteenth edition of the Blue Book of European Ski Resorts. It is designed for an Internet audience that wants quick and easy access to information on major resorts throughout Europe.

Although you can jump directly from the navigation bar on the cover page to a country map and then to a specific resort, you also have the flexibility to go through the book page by page, following the arrows at the top or bottom of each page.

Links are what make the book "user friendly." Not only can you move freely through the pages, but you can also connect to websites of the resorts. On each of our pages, you can click on the URL and go to the home page of the resort's tourist office. Several clicks and you can be viewing a hotel room in the destination village.

We have links to the offices of our sponsors — Austria Tourist Office, Switzerland Tourism, Innsbruck/Tyrol and Best of the Alps. They all offer direct communication to their websites for extensive information and outstanding photography that let visitors begin to enjoy their vacations long before they board a plane.

Many of the more popular resorts in our book have Spotlights, personal reviews that were originally written for www.OnTheSnow.com, the world's leading winter sports website. Visit the site for late news and weather reports.

Ted Heck
Editor & Publisher

One change in format is the simplification of how we present rates on lift tickets, ski schools, and equipment rentals. Instead of listing rates on the bottom of a resort's page, we have incorporated nearly all of them in a special rate section, where we present a general overview and describe ranges that vacationers can expect.

Much of the material here has been assembled by old friends with perhaps 200 combined years of experience in the majestic mountains of Europe. Bob Enzel, Richard Muello, George Schissler and Bob Wall continue as contributing editors. We also feature comments from Claire Walter, Paul Hand, Bob Dever, Mitch Kaplan, Phil Johnson and other writers. Many of the photographs in this edition were taken by Fred McKinney.

The sponsors and staff of the Blue Book hope you enjoy this new edition and use it to plan a memorable holiday in the snow.

ABOUT THE EDITOR

Ted Heck is a travel writer and Europhile who worked in Germany after World War II as a sports consultant to the U.S. Army and a play-by-play announcer in football and basketball for the Armed Forces Network. He returns every year and has had skiing adventures in more than 200 alpine resorts. For him being truly in love with snow is a big switch from sixty years ago, when he was a highly decorated platoon leader and company commander with the 70th Infantry Division. He fought under terrible conditions in the snow-covered Vosges Mountains of Alsace-Lorraine.

A retired executive in international marketing, he is now a full-time travel and ski writer. He writes a weekly column for the Harrisburg Patriot News in Pennsylvania and contributes to OnTheSnow.com, the world’s oldest and largest winter sports website.

Ted is also a contributor to JaxFax Travel Marketing magazine and many other publications. He is a member of North American Snowsports Journalists Association and the Society of American Travel Writers.
