GRAUBÜNDEN

(German and Romansch speaking region) These villages of Disentis/Muster and Sedrun are a half-dozen miles apart, but they share the same mountain and promote the same facilities. They are located along the Rhine, near where the river has its source. We have combined their statistics below to give you a better picture of what the region has to offer.

Elevation: Village: 1,150 m (3,772 ft); Top: 2,920 m (9,578 ft)

Vertical: 1,770 m (5,806 ft)

Longest Run: 12 km (7.4 mi)

Terrain: 110 km (68 mi) of pistes in the Disentis/Muster area. Sedrun is part of the Gotthard Oberalp Arena, which also includes Andermatt. Parallel ridges with both groomed trails and off-piste slopes are like giant fingers reaching down to the Rhine. The Sedrun area has two snowparks and a halpipe.

By Auto: Routes N3 and N13 to Chur, proceed up the Rhine toward Andermatt

By Train: International trains from Zürich. Like Andermatt, Disentis is a stop on the Glacier Express.

Best Deal: New winter offering: children under 12 don't have to pay to ski

Other Information: Generally lower prices make this an attractive area for families. Popular with Belgians and Dutch, who tend to be more budget conscious. About the language in the region: Romansch is derived from Latin and is the mother tongue of the people in the Surselva region. In the whole canton of Graubünden about 19 percent of the people speak Romansch, but in these two villages it is more than 90 percent. It is one of four official languages in the country, along with German, French and Italian.
